Prototype History
The origins of the RY wagon date back to 1928, when the Victorian Railways began constructing batches of outside-sill open wagons. Built between 1928 and 1934, these riveted wagons were originally coded IZ, featured buffers and had a nominal capacity of 25 tons.
From the mid-1960s, the wagons were progressively recoded RY. During their later service lives, many received HY-style welded replacement end panels, while others were rebuilt with entirely new welded steel bodies.
Most of the class had been withdrawn by the late 1970s. Around 60 were converted into KQ container wagons, while a further 248 were converted into GY wagons for bulk-product traffic.
