GY wagons were one of the most common open wagons on the Victorian Railways network and were widely used for carrying bulk freight, general goods, agricultural products, and industrial loads.
Prototype Background
The GY class open wagons were a major part of the Victorian Railways freight fleet for many decades. Developed from earlier wagon designs such as the I and IZ classes, they became a standard wagon for general open freight service.
These wagons were extremely versatile and could be seen carrying coal, timber, machinery, grain sacks, and many other loads. Depending on the service, wagons could be fitted with tarpaulins to protect cargo from the weather.
GY wagons remained in service for many years and were a familiar sight across branch lines, mainline freight services, and yard operations throughout Victoria.
