Prototype Background

The GY class open wagons were a backbone of the Victorian Railways freight fleet, used for transporting a wide range of loads including grain, general goods, and bulk materials.

Many wagons were fitted with tarpaulins to protect loads from the weather, creating the classic covered appearance seen across freight trains. Variations such as mesh steps and different numbering styles further added to the diversity of these wagons in service.
