Locomotive Profile – SAR 400 Class is a complete photographic profile of the South Australian Railways 400 Class narrow-gauge steam locomotives, covering their operations between 1953 and 1970. This volume documents the 10 articulated 4-8-2+2-8-4 locomotives built in France under licence to Beyer, Peacock & Co., Manchester, which were introduced to handle the heavy ore traffic on the narrow-gauge lines in South Australia.
The 400 Class primarily hauled ore from the NSW/SA border to smelters at Port Pirie, as well as serving the line to the break-of-gauge station at Terowie. Replaced by diesel locomotives in 1963, a few returned to service in 1969 before final withdrawals, with some stored at Peterborough. Notably, two locomotives have been preserved: No. 402 at the Zig Zag Railway, Lithgow, and No. 409 at the National Railway Museum, Port Adelaide.
Presented as a 48-page, full-colour photographic album, this book is an essential reference for South Australian railway historians, steam enthusiasts, modellers, and Australian rail book collectors, preserving the legacy of one of Australia’s most unique narrow-gauge articulated steam classes.
