Prototype History – SAR LX / ALGX Vans
These versatile 40'2" louvre vans were introduced to the South Australian Railways (SAR) in two batches beginning in 1968.
First Batch – 1968
Built at SAR Islington Workshops
Numbered LX 1–56
Pressed metal ends
Low-mounted inverted ratchet handbrake on the “Long” end
Second Batch – 1969 onwards
Numbered LX 57–156
Strengthened end panels
Mid-mounted ratchet handbrake on the “Short” end
Although similar in size to the Victorian VLF / VLX 40' louvre vans, the SAR vans differed in several ways:
Riveted roof sheets instead of welded seams
Different top door runner channel
Hybrid flooring design – steel plates between the door openings and timber beyond
Longer bogie centres at 29'2"
Originally delivered in SAR Wagon Grey, many of these vans were later repainted ANR Oxide Red and subsequently Australian National Green & Gold after the formation of Australian National in 1980.
These bogie exchange vans operated extensively across Australia on both broad gauge and standard gauge networks, travelling between Perth, Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney and beyond.
