Prototype History – VLX / VLCX Louvre Vans
These louvre vans were built for the Victorian Railways at Bendigo North, Newport, and Ballarat North Workshops between 1962 and December 1967.
Vans 1–87 & 99–135 were introduced as VLF, then recoded VLX between November 1963 and June 1965.
Vans 88–98 were built to the same pattern but introduced as VLX, fitted with timber floors.
Vans 136–660 featured a revised design with steel floors and were introduced as VLX.
Originally delivered with red roofs, these were repainted silver in the late 1960s.
During the 1979 reclassification, they became VLCX. In 1994, some were transferred to National Rail as RLCX, before returning to V/Line. Around 20 wagons were also recoded to VLVX for Freight Centre traffic.
Over time, these vans carried:
VR Wagon Red (no logo, small, medium & large VR logos)
V/Line branding
Freight Australia Green
Pacific National Blue
West Coast Railway Blue
Door styles evolved from plain panel doors to single louvre, twin louvre, and finally VHX style doors. Combinations of early door types were common.
