Prototype Background

The NSW Railways operated a wide range of louvre vans, in both 4-wheel and bogie configurations, built by various manufacturers over several decades.

  • 1951–1953:
300 LLV louvre van kits were imported from the Birmingham Railway Carriage & Wagon Co. Ltd and assembled in Australia by A.E. Goodwin Ltd.

    • Featured riveted underframes

    • Wagon numbers reused from scrapped stock

  • 1958–1959:
75 GLV louvre vans built by Tulloch Ltd. (Rhodes, NSW)

    • Featured welded underframes

    • Modified end panels

  • 1961–1965:
A further 200 LLV vans were built by Hadfields

In November 1963, these wagons were recoded from LLV to GLV following an increase in load capacity from 40 tons to 47 tons.

From October 1964, many were further recoded to GLX.

These vans were widely used across the NSW system carrying general freight, packaged goods, and ventilated loads, and were a common sight in freight trains across the state.
