7” Lettering | Unboxed
This SDS Models RY102 represents a Victorian Railways RY open wagon, featuring the later 7-inch lettering style applied during the wagon’s service life.
The model is a highly detailed ready-to-run HO scale wagon, finished in authentic VR livery.
Prototype Background
Between 1928 and 1934, the Victorian Railways constructed three batches of outside sill open wagons, originally coded IZ. These riveted wagons were built with buffers and had a nominal capacity of 25 tons.
From the mid-1960s, many wagons in the class were progressively recoded to RY. During this period, several wagons received HY-style welded end replacement panels, while others were rebuilt with entirely new welded steel bodies.
By the late 1970s, most wagons of the class had been withdrawn and scrapped. However, some found new uses:
Around 60 wagons were converted to KQ container wagons
248 wagons were rebuilt as GY wagons for bulk freight service
These wagons were widely used across the Victorian Railways network carrying general freight and bulk goods.
