A detailed wagon suited to 1980s–2000s Victorian freight operations.
Prototype History – FX / VPFX Bulk Flour Wagon
Seventeen of these pneumatic discharge wagons were constructed between 1966 and 1971, numbered FX1–17.
FX1–6 were built at Newport Workshops
FX7–17 were built at Ballarat North Workshops
The first series was designed so that two of the four hoppers were unloaded from each end. The second series differed by introducing a single discharge point at each end via additional piping and manifold arrangements.
Originally finished in silver with a small VR logo, many later received flour company branding, some were repainted white, and their use expanded to include burnt lime (VPLX) and dried locomotive sand (VZGX) traffic.
Although coded FX (denoting suitability for bogie exchange), they primarily operated on the broad gauge between Albury, Williamstown Pier, and Westall, with some later running on standard gauge services to Enfield and Canberra during the mid-1980s.
