Prototype History – FX / VPFX Bulk Flour Wagon

Seventeen of these pneumatic discharge wagons were constructed between 1966 and 1971, numbered FX1–17.

  • FX1–6 were built at Newport Workshops

  • FX7–17 were built at Ballarat North Workshops

The first series was designed so that two of the four hoppers were unloaded from each end. The second series differed by incorporating a single discharge point at each end via additional piping and manifold arrangements.

Initially delivered in silver with a small VR logo, many later received flour company branding, some were repainted white, and their service expanded to include burnt lime (VPLX) and dried locomotive sand (VZGX) traffic.

Although coded FX (denoting suitability for bogie exchange), they were primarily used on the broad gauge between Albury, Williamstown Pier, and Westall, with some operating on standard gauge services to Enfield and Canberra during the mid-1980s.
