New South Wales C38 Class Profile – Part 2
New South Wales C38 Class Profile – Part 2
Explore the history, development and working life of the legendary New South Wales Government Railways C38 Class 4-6-2 Pacific locomotives in this photographic profile from Train Hobby Publications.
The C38 Class was developed to eliminate the need for double-heading heavy express passenger and mail trains over the steeply graded Main Southern Line between Sydney Central and Albury. The first five locomotives, 3801 to 3805, were constructed between 1943 and 1945 with distinctive semi-streamlined bodies. The remaining members, 3806 to 3830, were built between 1945 and 1949 with a more traditional front-end design.
Powerful, fast and instantly recognisable, the C38 Class became one of Australia’s most celebrated steam locomotive designs. Several members carried the famous green passenger livery, while others appeared in black with distinctive red lining. The class worked many of New South Wales’ most prestigious passenger trains and remained closely associated with express railway operations for decades.
Compiled by Billy Lewis, this second volume presents a detailed photographic record of the class, from its introduction during the difficult years of the Second World War through to the end of regular steam operation. The large landscape format provides excellent views of the locomotives, passenger trains, stations and railway infrastructure.
