Oxford Diecast 1:76 Tate & Lyle Sentinel Dropside Steam Wagon

A$35.00

Add a distinctive piece of British commercial transport history to your collection with the Oxford Diecast Tate & Lyle Sentinel Dropside Steam Wagon. Produced in 1:76 scale, this finely detailed model recreates a Sentinel steam-powered dropside vehicle operating in the elegant gold-and-white livery of the famous Tate & Lyle sugar company.

The model represents a vehicle used to transport sugar, including Tate & Lyle’s well-known sugar cubes, to shops, businesses and customers across Britain. Its period appearance makes it ideal for OO gauge model railway layouts, vintage road scenes, industrial settings, goods yards and historic commercial vehicle collections.

Sentinel Waggon Works

The Sentinel story began with Alley & MacLellan of Glasgow, founded in 1875 and originally focused on steam-powered machinery and vehicles. After acquiring a similar Shropshire-based operation in 1903, the company moved steam wagon production to Shrewsbury around 1915.

Sentinel became known for producing steam lorries, steam wagons, railway locomotives and, later, diesel-powered buses, lorries and locomotives. The double-geared DG4 vehicle was introduced around 1931, during a period when Sentinel and Foden were major names in Britain’s steam vehicle market.

Changes to government regulations during the 1930s encouraged the use of lighter road vehicles, contributing to the decline of heavy steam wagons. Sentinel later became associated with Rolls-Royce.

Tate & Lyle Heritage

Tate & Lyle’s history can be traced to Henry Tate & Sons, founded by sugar merchant and refiner Henry Tate in 1869. The company became a major name in British sugar production, with Henry Tate also credited with developing the sugar cube during the early 1870s.

In 1921, Henry Tate & Sons merged with Abram Lyle & Sons, the company famous for Lyle’s Golden Syrup. The merger created Tate & Lyle, bringing together two of Britain’s best-known sugar and syrup businesses.

Detailed Period Livery

The model is finished with elegant gold-and-white Tate & Lyle branding. The company name is printed across the front of the cab and the rear dropside panel, accompanied by lettering identifying the sugar refiners’ Liverpool and London operations.

The cab doors feature a detailed Royal Warrant “By Appointment” coat of arms, while the vehicle carries the registration KA 1458. Additional details include glazed cab windows, a black interior and a silver chimney topped with gold.
