A Photographic Profile: Victorian Railways D3 Class 4-6-0 Locomotive
A Photographic Profile: Victorian Railways D3 Class 4-6-0 Locomotive
Originally introduced as the Victorian Railways DD Class, 94 D1 and D2 locomotives were rebuilt into the 4-6-0 D3 Class between 1929 and 1947.
With their relatively low axle load, economical coal consumption and reliable performance, the D3 locomotives were well suited to passenger and goods services across Victoria’s branch-line network. Many remained in service for around half a century, with the final member withdrawn in 1974.
This publication follows the D3 Class from the late 1940s through to the end of regular service, presenting a photographic record of these versatile Victorian steam locomotives.
One of the class, D3 639, remains in operational preservation with Steamrail Victoria and continues to represent an important part of Victoria’s railway heritage.
